Location & Manufacturing
Every Katansi saree is handwoven in Varanasi (Banaras), Uttar Pradesh, India — the city that has been the world's capital of silk weaving for over 2,000 years. Our entire weaving operation is based in Banaras. We work directly with 5,000+ artisan weaver families in the city. Katansi has no manufacturing in Surat or anywhere else — every saree comes directly from the looms of Banaras.
Katansi sarees are made by 5,000+ master weavers from Varanasi — skilled artisans from families who have been weaving Banarasi silk for generations. We work directly with these artisan families with no middlemen. Every purchase directly supports a weaver's livelihood and preserves a 2,000-year-old craft tradition.
It depends on the complexity of the weave:
  • A light Chiffon saree takes 5–7 days on the handloom
  • A Pure Katan with floral Jaal takes 15–20 days
  • A heavy brocade with full Meenakari Zari Jaal can take 60–90 days
Each saree is woven 8 hours a day by one or two weavers — entirely by hand, thread by thread.
We do not currently offer open visitor access to our weaving units in Varanasi. However, we offer personalised video call showcase sessions where you can see the sarees and speak with our team directly. Book a video call here.
Silk & Quality
Every Katansi saree is made from 100% pure natural silk and comes with an official Silk Mark Certificate issued by the Government of India — your legal guarantee of pure silk. The Silk Mark cannot legally be issued for non-silk products. Our certificate number is SMOI/MUM/2023-24/5786, valid until November 2028.

✓ Silk Mark Certificate included with every saree
You can test silk authenticity at home:
  • Touch test — Pure silk warms up quickly when rubbed between fingers. Polyester stays cool.
  • Burn test — Take a loose thread. Real silk smells like burning hair and leaves black powdery ash. Polyester smells like burning plastic and leaves a hard bead.
  • Shine test — Pure silk has a natural multi-directional lustre. Polyester has a flat, uniform shine.
Your Silk Mark Certificate is the official government-backed confirmation. If you have any concern, contact us immediately.
Katansi offers pure Banarasi silk, Kanjivaram silk, pure Katan silk, Muga silk, Chiffon, Georgette, Kora Organza, Tissue silk, handwoven Cotton and Linen sarees — all handwoven by master artisans in Varanasi. We also offer blouses, dupattas, lehengas, and jewellery.
Katan silk refers to the fabric — pure silk threads twisted together for extra strength and lustre. Banarasi silk refers to the weaving style from Varanasi, known for intricate zari work and brocade motifs. A Pure Katan Banarasi saree combines both — the finest Katan fabric woven in the Banarasi style, making it the most prized saree in India.

Minor irregularities — slight variations in weave density, zari placement, or yarn texture — are inherent to authentic handwoven silk. They are not defects. They are the signatures of a master weaver's hands, proof your saree was made by a person and not a machine. Learn more on our Natural Irregularities page.

Saree Care
Dry clean only for best results. Store in soft muslin cloth away from direct sunlight. Avoid plastic covers which trap moisture. Do not spray perfume directly on silk. For minor wrinkles, steam iron on low heat with a cloth between the iron and saree. Proper care ensures your Katansi saree lasts generations.
Store folded in soft muslin or cotton cloth in a dry, cool place. Avoid hanging silk sarees — the weight stretches the fabric over time. Re-fold every few months to prevent permanent creases. Keep naphthalene balls away from direct contact with silk — they damage the zari.
Returns & Exchanges
Katansi offers returns and exchanges for sarees with a genuine structural defect or significantly different from the product listing. Contact our team within 7 days of delivery with clear photographs of the issue. We resolve all genuine issues promptly. See our full Returns & Exchange policy.
